Youth
by Damien Fehrenbach

We were both children then.
        Young
                pure
                        innocent.
Holding hands as we walked through life,
        always smiling with joy.
Every kiss was forgiven,
        every sin overwritten.

But that's all changed now.
Something has come between us and
        communion.
Swept in
        like a crimson tide.
Brought blood shed
        and disgrace
to us all.
I can feel it in every pore
        so heavy
it weighs me down
        away from you.

Away from the only place
        I want to be.
