Exile
(May 2, 1999)
by David B. Rhaesa

In this state of self-imposed exile
I listen to Ray Charles
Sittin’ on Top of the World
Misery in My Heart
Ah yes – I know these feelings
But they aren’t where I’m at now
In this moment in my life

In this state of self-imposed exile
I listen to Bob
Desolation Row
And I know that I need to be here
Though I’m not certain I have the
Strength or courage
To learn what I need to learn
Face what I need to face

When nothing works
What do I do?
I can run away
I can chase after
Or I can stand and wait
In this self-imposed exile
Waiting for my
Heart and soul to point me
In the direction that
Leads out of exile and into the future.

I hope that it will be with you
But I may find out that it isn’t.
And if it isn’t – I hope that you will be fine
And I hope that I will be fine
Without each other to lean on.
