Horizons
(5-2-99)
by David B. Rhaesa

A pure blue appears
On the horizon to the West
And to the South
As I listen to Leonard Cohen’s
I’m Your Man
And I hope the haze
Is lifting for everyone today.

As I dress I notice that
Almost every T-shirt I own
Came from you after one of your
Long distance running races
Or the shop we went to downtown
With my sister and nephews
For the bargains.
I realize that you’re going to be with me
At least every day until the cooler
Fall weather hits me.

As I take my vitamins I notice that
Almost everything is something
I learned about being healthy
Either from you telling me
Or from watching you
And I realize that you’re going to be with me
Every step of the rest of my life.

As I think about doing things for the day I notice that
Almost every place I enjoy in Denver
I’ve been to with you
And I remember our outings
Like ghosts skirting at the edge of my
Consciousness.
And I realize that you’re going to be with me
Every breath of every moment to eternity.

Sometimes the haunting will be a wonderful feeling.
Memories of beauty and ecstasy will lift my spirits
And I will find blue on the horizons of my soul.
