Stop me before I kill again
by Dennis Cardwell

If I had it, I have lost it.
Somewhere along the way
It sloughed off like snakeskin.
That is, if I ever had it,
But we all did once,
Didn't we?

And so,
The sudden whiteness of their bodies
Stunned me, slapped me awake
Like a silent visual alarm clock
With brilliant luminous face
snapped on in mid-sleep.

I have lain so and loved so.
I have felt my own skin glow.
I have basked in the glow
Of other's skins.
But it seems so long ago,
So long
Since the blending of auras
And the ascension of souls.

One day I came home unexpectedly and found my brother (10 years younger) asleep in the arms of a girl I'd never seen before. I closed the door quietly and left. As soon as I could find a place to sit down, I wrote this poem.
