The hidden Poetry in Mainstream Media
by pocket consciousness

reconstructive poetry using random phrases from JUICE music magazine, Issue April 1999.

1. NOT WORTHY OF DISPLAY

afraid of heights?
document this heart-stopping action,
set to begin filming,
guided to the scene.
follow up an epic,
a psychadelic opus,
an attempt to avoid talking
in self-imposed exile...
I am not resistant;
I like the sound of it...
anoraks and looking at your feet.
digesting the drama of it all
until it wasnt real anymore
then buy it on video;
looking at empty boxes on the shelf,
inner coating of laminated polyester.
any distinguishing features,
i just put them in a cup
for the whole world to laugh at
in the lack-of flashing lights:
"your voice shouldn't be heard"
"girls don't like skinny guys"
the teen horror template,
maps his sentimental journey
walking along the railway line
on space tracks.
a monster among many,
ignored by all.

2. COMEBACK

there are stirrings going on
alienation and the struggle to connect.
there's a giant comet;
naive and entirely unused.
it's a long way from the garage
expected to jump queues,
conform but reach for something new!
something that would dawn on people,
mining a huge vein of nostalgia;
there's a kind of humanity,
a problem with sobriety,
reports of widespread underage drinking
the resurgence of hiphop
coming from a different suburb,
spun successfully into a second life,
off the road.
a product of the questionably sane,
that tomorrow's DJ will be spinning,
programming with atmospheric washes
but sharp driven verses,
dressing up old staple moves
that were better in retrospect.
over this, guitars buzz
off-kilter melodies,
humming a chorus or two,
but not shining quite as brightly;
collapsed upon itself
with the craze in full tilt
its all the sides!

3. INVENTION OF A NEW MAN

His next electric album
tempers his wheezing with constant cigarettes.
if you find this detail at all strange,
it's an entrance to another
- i can't say that word -
mellow - is not a favoured word
but crackles to life with neon green amplitude waves,
colour saturated.
the creative result of that journey
available as a limited edition
and it comes off
close to menacing
without the use of computones;
but the tactile nature of the old game.
he sleeps strange hours,
doing justice to his own songs.
to strip away the noise,
to the honeydew melon voice.
that way he made himself dangerous,
adopt a foreign accent;
consider cannibalism.
in sync with the ethos
in this old flower power shot
amongst dozens of sweet environments.

4. SAFETY DEVICE

orbital contruction phase
developed in some faculty,
speeds up the downloading
dynamics of that rhythm.
airbag inflates in a serious collision
for fear of jinxing
or a repeat of what i'd done.

5. THE ENIGMATIC STAR

"oh fuck, where am i going to sleep tonight?"

reliance on self for strength is
the biggest myth.
she constantly confounded herself.
the cork has popped!
fortunate to be paid,
check for booby traps
(that's the one over your head)
and expect a little mayhem to surround.
throw a chair at someone;
winners perch much too politely,
in perennial cool.
take it back to the masses;
they're just kids,
to her small-screen-teen-queen.
isn't she all mystic?
this reflects current trends.
see the sense in this?
there's not much here.
