Boiled Peanuts
by R. Bentz Kirby

At the intersection of 176 and 301
In Paxville, there is a country store
With watermelon aisles and concrete floors,
Butt roast, chitterlings and other delicacies
Like boiled peanuts.
The legume is pressure heated
Over gas burners in salted water.
Drained and bagged for $1.50.
Salty. The new crop are
Squishy, almost melting.
The older firm like cardboard.
Not for everyone.
My children delight
When they appear from
Daddy's bag upon my return.
More desired than toys.
The pods are strewn across
The room leading to a cross mother.
